“New York needs same sex marriage — now” (May 26-June 1) I couldn’t disagree more, and most likely whoever wrote that editorial is a homosexual or bisexual. However the majority of New Yorkers are still most likely of the Judaic-Christian beliefs, although I realize with both legal and illegal immigration comes also their religious beliefs. more

To the Editor: Regarding Scott Brinton’s column, “Note to Birthers: Let it go” (May 5-11): The Birthers will not, as Brinton suggests, let it go. Yes, they know the president is as American as they are. They knew that on day one. Regardless, they’ll continue with their campaign against President Obama as long as the media writes and speaks about it. more
Have you heard of the Taylor Law? The county workers, MTA, teachers and police all know it well. It’s invoked when they seek more money and benefits if the powers in charge don’t accommodate them. Part of it says public employees can’t strike. more

Congratulations to the Valley Stream Herald, and in particular to Andrew Hackmack and Michelle Gil, for the award from the New York Press Association for your coverage of the erroneous flood maps put out by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which hurt so many residents in Gibson. more
The excellent performance last week during the basement fire at 137 Munro Blvd. was a true testament to the professionalism of our excellent Fire Department. more
I’d like to know why Lynbrook resident Bob Barra was appointed and confirmed to be Valley Stream village clerk. This should not be legal. Our mayor and trustees have sent the message that no one in this village is more capable to do the job than a Lynbrook guy best known for bringing coffee to Dean Skelos.  more
This Hewlett Heights saga should not even be a topic of conversation. I am a resident of Valley Stream. Though I do not live in Gibson myself, I have grown up knowing the area very well and, additionally, have good friends who live there. To really get into the crux of the situation I would like to start from the beginning. more
