The Town of Hempstead Industrial Development Agency’ adjourned their June 30 meeting after only 10 minutes, unable to continue with a vote to break all ties with Macerich, the California-based owner of the Green Acres Mall, because a Nassau County Supreme Court judge halted the IDA’s decision with a temporary restraining order.

The Central High School District Board of Education voted on June 13 to authorize a lawsuit against District 24 for about $2 million that it withheld from the high school district for the 2016–17 school year, after the districts disputed what was owed based on the uncertainty of the taxable status of the Green Acres Mall property.

The Central High School District Board of Education passed a resolution on June 6 to ask the New York State Commissioner of Education to intervene if board members from District 24 do not recuse themselves from future meetings concerning possible litigation against District 24. The resolution passed by a vote of 5-to-3, with only District 24 board members voting “no.”

While local lawmakers are working to return the Green Acres Mall to the county tax rolls for the upcoming school year, the mall’s ownership is pursuing legal options to do just the opposite, in the wake of the Town of Hempstead Industrial Development Agency’s abrupt April 27 decision to revoke the mall’s tax breaks due to a lack of job creation just two years after it granted them.
