After six years of attending classes, submitting homework assignments and building lifelong friendships, the seniors at North High School took their final collective bow on June 21 during the school’s 56th annual commencement ceremony.

For the third time since the project was approved in 2005, developer of the Dutchgate senior housing complex in North Valley Stream, on the border with Elmont, has asked the Town of Hempstead to lower the minimum age to 55. This time, however, there was a new twist — the developer wanted to be able to rent unsold units.

When Hurricane Sandy struck on Oct. 29, it severely damaged a number of Town of Hempstead facilities in the Bellmore-Merrick area. Repair work is under way, but it could be some time before they are up and running again. Particularly hard hit were the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve, the Sanitation Department and the Merrick Senior Center.

After 13 months at the Firemen’s Field clubhouse, the Silver Threads senior group is back at Hendrickson Park. The seniors were displaced last August when a heavy rainstorm filled the former administration building with three feet of water, seriously damaging the complex.
