During any big game in a professional sport, the home team’s crowd makes sure they’re heard to give their team a competitive edge. Although there are no professional indoor elementary school hockey leagues, the gymnasium at the William L. Buck School was still pretty loud on Jan. 14 during the annual District 24 sixth-grade hockey tournament.

After a long layoff, hockey is making its way back to Valley Stream in less than two months. Jeff Kotcher, a 23-year-old Valley Stream resident, has officially founded the Valley Stream Roller Hockey League and plans to get the first season underway in late May.

There hasn’t been much action at Valley Stream’s hockey rink in recent months, but that won’t be the case for much longer. The Village Board of Trustees approved a proposal earlier this month to bring an adult hockey league to Valley Stream, with play slated to begin in the late spring or early summer.

The National Hockey League began its season two weeks ago, which was better late than never for its fan base after a long work stoppage. Hockey may be returning to Valley Stream as well, as the village is in negotiations to bring an adult roller hockey league to its currently dormant rink.
