Protesters’ signs jeered at the Town of Hempstead on Sunday, calling a decision to trap and move feral cats in a colony at Newbridge Road Park in Bellmore “cruel” and “corrupt.” The town had planed to move dozens of feral cats from their makeshift protected shelter behind the baseball field at the park. The move was set to begin on May 1, but following the weekend’s protest, the town has postponed the relocation. more
Bellmore-Merrick Democrats are rejoicing and Republicans are reorganizing after a court-appointed magistrate recently redrew New York’s congressional district lines, moving the 3rd C.D., long represented by Republican Peter King of Seaford, further east, taking Bellmore-Merrick out of the district. more
The Merrick-Bellmore Community Concert Association has been a staple of the community since the early 1950s. It’s now winding down its 58th season, and it will begin the 2012-13 season, its 59th, in September. But if the organization is to make it to its 60th season, it may need a significant boost in attendance, said President Mark Manas. more
A Nassau County police officer was found dead Monday morning at Mill Pond Preserve in Bellmore. Police report that a pedestrian was walking through the preserve when he came across a male’s body on the bike bath. It is believed to be an act of suicide. more
