The 49th Nassau County Ancient Order of Hibernians Feis and Irish Festival is set for Sunday, Sept. 19, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Nickerson Beach in Lido Beach, and this year’s honoree will be John O’Connell, the former executive editor of Herald Community Newspapers, who retired in 2016.

Sirens blared and tires squealed as a white Chevy Caprice banked hard into a curve at Jones Beach State Park after peeling down a straightaway at 50 miles per hour last Thursday. Meanwhile, a black Crown Victoria cruiser raced across to cut the vehicle off at a four-way intersection. The Caprice braked hard as it neared the stop sign.

A 31-year-old Hempstead man, Gabriel DeWitt Wilson, was charged with one count of second-degree murder and four counts of attempted murder Wednesday after he allegedly entered the West Hempstead Stop & Shop the day before and started shooting employees in the manager's office, according to officials.
