In 2002, my wife and I were living in a one-bedroom apartment that we owned on Park Avenue in Long Beach. We loved the City by the Sea but wanted a smaller, quieter community in which to raise our children. We’ve never regretted our decision to move to Merrick.

I remember a hallway full of sunlight that streamed through floor-to-ceiling windows. Off to one side were tables and chairs for 3- and 4-year-olds. Miniature wooden tea sets from Russia, hand-painted in brilliant colors, were set neatly atop each table. At the end of the hall, I entered a playroom with rainforest murals covering the walls.
This, I thought, is the Evil Empire?

“The place was packed,” recalled O’Shaughnessy of the facility, squeezed between a window factory and a truck yard, which gives immigrant day laborers a safe place to wait for landscapers and contractors to pick them up for jobs.
