Morris Kramer, pictured above at the Starbucks in Long Beach, a civic and environmental activist from Atlantic Beach, scored a historic Supreme Court victory in June 1969 that overturned restrictive voting practices across the U.S.

First of two parts. In 1965, Morris Kramer, a 30-year-old bachelor who lived in Atlantic Beach with his mother, claimed that the Lawrence Public School District and the State of New York were discriminating against him. Kramer owned no property and had no children in the schools, so, by state law at the time, he couldn’t vote in a school district election. That, he said, violated his constitutional rights. more

Jury selection upcoming in trial of 2 former legislators

According to the Nassau County district attorney's office, a jury will likely be selected on Feb. 13 for the trial of former Nassau County legislators Roger Corbin and Patrick Williams, who were indicted by the D.A.'s office in July 2010 on corruption, larceny and bribery charges for their alleged involvement in multiple bid-rigging and bribery schemes in the New Cassel Redevelopment Project. more

Redistricting map halted in court –– again

A State Supreme Court justice has signed a temporary restraining order barring Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, the County Board of Elections and the County Legislature from adopting the new legislative redistricting lines that were approved on May 24. more

The Nassau County Legislature passed a measure to redraw the current legislative map in a vote on Tuesday. Ten Republicans voted for the plan, while seven Democrats voted against it. Legislator Denise Ford, a Republican from Long Beach, was the lone dissenting voice in her party.

Under a Republican plan to redraw the Nassau County Legislature’s district lines, Democratic Legislator David Denenberg, of Merrick, would see his district –– the 19th –– merged with Legislator Joseph Scannell’s district –– the 5th. In effect, Democrats would lose a seat. A State Supreme Court justice, however, placed a temporary restraining order on the plan on Thursday, effectively preventing it from taking effect until the matter is decided in court.
