National organization Food and Water Watch, along with Citizens Campaign for the Environment, Reach Out America and Grassroots Environmental Education, held a public forum on April 23, at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Shelter Rock in Manhasset, to rally support for a ban on hydraulic fracturing — a process that involves the injection of millions of gallons of water, chemicals and sand into shale rock formations at high pressure to break apart the rock and release trapped natural gas.

South Shore residents accustomed to jumping in their boats and heading out for a day of clamming in Hempstead Bay will have to travel farther this spring and summer. At the recommendation of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Town of Hempstead’s shellfishing areas west of the Wantagh Parkway were closed in February, with additional areas closed on April 1. Affected areas include the waters south of Bellmore, Merrick and Freeport.

Nassau County Legislators Denise Ford, Howard Kopel and Dennis Dunne, all Republicans, recently filed legislation to ban the processing of hydraulic fracturing, or “hydrofracking,” waste at county sewage-treatment plants. On March 26, the Republicans’ bill passed out of the Legislature’s Planning and Rules Committee.
