The teenager, a student at Calhoun High School, had a “severe case of alcohol poisoning,” said Calhoun Principal Nicole Hollings in an email to parents on June 12. He drank at a “large gathering” of Calhoun seniors in the woods between Brookside School and the Meadowbrook State Parkway, Hollings wrote.

Thomas Macaluso, a senior on the Calhoun High School boys’ golf team, will attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., in the fall to study nuclear engineering. In addition to the relaxation that golf provided during his years at Calhoun, he said, the sport gave him the chance to hone the lessons on force, range and wind resistance that he learned in Advanced Placement physics class.
