Alyssa Garbarino’s second concussion came on a frigid Sunday afternoon when she was 17. Under overcast skies, Garbarino, of North Merrick, who was then playing with the East Meadow Soccer Club’s Storm, bruised her way through a sea of bodies. As she battled with her opponent on the Northport Cow Harbor United Soccer Club, she was constantly driven to the ground, her head hitting the hard earth. As fast as she went down, though, she popped back up. As the game wore on, she began to feel dizzy and developed a sharp headache.

For the first time in Calhoun High School history, a track relay team has qualified for nationals. The sprint medley relay squad of Devon Bayer, Grace Moore, Cristin Rodriguez and Juliann Vizoso finished third at the national qualifying meet in New York City on Feb. 12 and will return to the city for the National Track & Field Championships on March 11.

Calhoun High School senior Josh Aberman loves poetry, particularly the Beat Generation poetry produced by such luminaries as Allen Ginsberg. So, when Aberman was looking to do a fundraiser for the Economic Policy Institute as a senior project, he thought he might try an event aimed at writers.

Each year the Society for Science & The Public awards Research Report Badges to students entering the Intel Science Talent Search whose reports demonstrate a high degree of research and are exceptionally well written.
The reports, Bellmore-Merrick Central District science teachers say, could have been produced by graduate, rather than high school, science students.
Two Calhoun High School seniors –– Nicole Fegan and Paulina Fein –– recently received word that they have been awarded Research Report Badges for their papers submitted to the Intel contest last fall.

While attending an ice hockey tournament in upstate Lake Placid in late January, Calhoun High School senior Austin McLoughlin sprung into action to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation after a player was struck in the head and suffered a seizure on the ice.

Katherine Ratner thought the measurement system used to categorize hurricanes –– called the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale –– was inadequate. So the Calhoun High School senior, 17, set out to create a new system, one that better reflected the size and strength of these monster storms.

The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District and the Jason Gruen Foundation recently tested 150 ninth-graders over two weekends, checking their hearts with advanced portable electrocardiogram and echocardiogram machines. Screenings took place at Calhoun High School in Merrick on Jan. 9 and 16.

Calhoun High School kicked off the holiday season by hosting its annual Thanksgiving dinner filled with turkeys, desserts and music. Staff members, students and parents enjoyed a holiday meal together on Friday, Nov. 20, raising more than $2,000 in donations.
