The Sacred Heart Catholic Youth Organization seventh-/eighth-grade girls’ soccer team was the runner-up for the 2013 Nassau County CYO Championship title. The championship game was played at Town Park in Merrick on Sept. 17. Sacred Heart fell to St. Dominic’s of Oyster Bay 2-1 in the match.

Hundreds of local women gathered in Cedarhurst last week to support a Bellmore-Merrick breast cancer support center.
Circle of Hope, a project of the Merrick-Bellmore-Wantagh Chabad Center for Jewish Life, hosted its second “Journey for a Purpose” benefit on Oct. 24. The event, which featured special guests and award presentations to local survivors and activists, attracted an estimated 400 women to the Sephardic Temple’s grand ballroom for what organizers described as an entertaining evening for a cause.

Seventeen years ago, Merokean Cindy Knoll was diagnosed with breast cancer. Even though she was then a patient undergoing treatment, she was also still a mother of three. The survivor said she doesn’t know what she would have done if her mother weren’t around to watch her then 1-year-old daughter and help –– and now she wants to make sure other local women battling the disease have the same support.
“You love your children, but you are worried about surviving,” she said. “I had a very good support group in my family, but some people don’t, and we want to help them. “
