In the four Bellmore-Merrick elementary districts, every grade from third to sixth surpassed the average county and state scores on the English Language Arts and math state exams, the results of which were released by the New York State Department of Education last week. School superintendents expressed satisfaction with the results, but also cautioned that their districts will need to continue to work hard to prepare students for future statewide exams, which since 2010 have included longer, more difficult problems. more

As if straight out of a television commercial, a young camper asked New York Giants punter Steve Weatherford the question — “Since you’ve just won the Super Bowl, what are you going to do next?” No, he did not say, “I’m going to Disney World.” Instead, Weatherford smiled and said, “I’m going to Coleman Country Day Camp.” The response evoked raucous applause from the hundreds of Coleman Country Day campers who looked on in awe at the recent Super Bowl champion. more
Luke Massaro’s violin was created 197 years before he was born. Last month, the 18-year-old recent Kennedy High School graduate stepped into an East Meadow violin shop to purchase a new violin. He was determined to find the right one, emphasizing that each violin is unique to its owner. more
