Unbeknown to many, one of the pioneers of modern music makes his living on the South Shore. Anyone who has studied music at Hofstra University would recognize him, as he has been teaching at the school for 51 years. His name is Herbert Deutsch, and he lives in Massapequa Park with his wife, Nancy. In 1964, at age 32, he co-invented the Moog synthesizer, helping to pave the way for electronic music.

Mepham High School has officially gone viral.
On June 8, a video was uploaded to YouTube featuring hundreds of Mepham students taking part in a choreographed dance celebration throughout the school. But it wasn’t just students — faculty and administrators got in on the fun too.

With the National Weather Service predicting temperatures to soar to the mid-90s, and perhaps as high as 100, over the next two days, the Town of Hempstead has opened “cooling centers” at its senior center on Clubhouse Road in Merrick and its senior center on Bellmore Avenue in Bellmore, as well as extended hours at pools across the town.

Justin Plotnick was doing what any other 16-year-old would do. Last September, the Mepham junior was with his friends, skateboarding outside Mepham High School on a sunny afternoon. He had just bought a new fisheye lens for his camera earlier that day and was testing it out.
That’s when his friend, Richie Dominguez, also a Mepham junior, converted a perfect tail slide with his skateboard on a nearby bench. Plotnick snapped the photo, but it wasn’t until after when he realized he had captured the moment perfectly.

Already displeased with the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s decision last December to close the K-8 Sacred Heart School in North Merrick at the end of the school year, Sacred Heart parents have now become vocal about the diocese’s decision not to offer severance pay to faculty members who are losing their jobs.

Dozens of walkers recently took part in the annual Bellmore-Merrick Relay for Life, a walk-a-thon fundraiser that raises money to support the American Cancer Society’s research, education and advocacy efforts.
The event was held at Merrick Road Park, next to the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve.
