Parts of Wantagh Parkway closed because of movie shoot

The northbound lanes of the Wantagh Parkway will be closed between Jones Beach and Merrick Road until 7 p.m. on Nov. 18. New York State Parks Deputy Regional Director George Gorman said to expect intermittent closures on the southbound side for no more than 10 minutes at a time. The parkway is facing closures because of a movie that is being filmed there. more

Initial, unconfirmed reports were that cyanide was found on a woman at the Bellmore Post Office, which prompted authorities to call in the Nassau County Hazardous Materials unit and to shut down Merrick Road in front of the mail facility.

Police shut down Bellmore Post Office over cyanide scare

Updated: 2:30 p.m.Nassau County Police and the U.S. Marshals Service cordoned off the Bellmore Post Office and surrounding streets at around 11 a.m. today, shutting down Merrick Road for several blocks to the east and west. According to police, a woman who U.S. marshals were tracking turned up at the mail facility with a bottle marked "sodium cyanide." more
