The East Meadow High School marching band made its Columbus Day Parade debut in 1992, under the direction of Bill Katz, Ken Sepe, Joel Levy and Abby Behr. The band took first place among high school groups that year, and followed that performance with 10 more first-place finishes over the next 20 years. On Oct. 14, the band not only notched its 12th overall victory, but its third in a row.

More than 30,000 runners and walkers converged on the Red Hook section of Brooklyn on Sunday, lining up near the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel. At 9:30 a.m. they were off, hurrying through the tunnel and then the side streets and quiet park walkways of Lower Manhattan in the 11th annual Tunnel to Towers Run, which has become one of New York City’s biggest races.

On Aug. 5, I traveled to ground zero in Lower Manhattan to photograph the epicenter of the worst terrorist attacks on American soil, nearly 10 years later. As I scaled the subway steps leading to Vesey Street, on the north side of what had been the World Trade Center before September 11, 2001, I was uncertain what to expect when I reached the top of the staircase. The last time that I visited ground zero, in August 2006, I felt forlorn. It was a hauntingly empty place. What would I find this time?
