Carmine Cella served in the United States Air Force from 1943 to 1946, and was stationed in Saipan and the Tinian during World War II, which are part of U.S.’s Northern Mariana Islands, in the western Pacific Ocean. Cella, now 91, said he couldn’t help but notice a huge commotion while deployed in Tinian. “I knew something was going on over there,” he said. “I didn’t know what it was.” He later learned he was on the same island as the atomic bombs, which would soon be launched on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. more
