I am nothing if not trendy. On Oct. 7, I underwent surgery for breast cancer following a diagnosis two weeks earlier. It is, after all, Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I wouldn’t think of having cancer any other time of the year.

On the 21st anniversary of the greater New York City Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, I went to Central Park West for the annual immersion into a sea of pink. Like so many, I have done this jaunt for as long as I can remember. The effort is a solitary 5K walk for a cause greater than myself.
