As he walked 13 miles through the scorching heat and humidity on a 95-degree August day in Columbia, S.C., side by side with leaders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and other clergy from across the country, Rabbi Daniel Bar-Nahum couldn’t help but think of the progress he made with each step of his journey as a metaphor for the nation’s struggle to provide equal rights for all its citizens.

It’s been a festive year for the East Meadow Jewish Center, which has celebrated its 60th anniversary with a wide variety of community events. The festivities culminated last weekend, when the congregation hosted a Diamond Jubilee Weekend Celebration, a three-day event commemorating the synagogue’s history.

While many local residents fasted for 24 hours beginning last Friday evening in observance of Yom Kippur, Temple Emanu-El, of East Meadow, asked its members to go one step further and donate the food they didn’t eat to those who need it.

Beginning in September, the East Meadow Jewish Center’s Hebrew school is shortening the class schedule for its third grade class, moving from a three-day-week program to two days. The change, said school officials, will be used as a blueprint to shorten classes for all of its grades in the future.

In 1953, the East Meadow Jewish Center was built on Prospect Avenue. The Conservative Jewish synagogue began with just over 100 founding members, and was led by spiritual leader Dr. Israel Nobel.

Temple Emanu-El has been a cornerstone in the East Meadow community for more than 50 years. For nearly six decades, the synagogue has served the religious needs of Jewish residents through prayer, schooling and community spirit.

If somehow we have become lost; if we have made a wrong turn, a bad decision, an unwise choice; if we have chosen the wrong route or a self-destructive path the High Holy Day season provide us with the opportunity to reorient ourselves, to determine the direction we should be heading, to recalculate our position and to redirect ourselves towards our destination.

The East Meadow Jewish Center Hebrew School was informed in a letter on Jan. 12 that it was re-certified as a School of Excellence by the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism.
