The Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Tolerance program has named Woodland Middle School in the East Meadow Union Free School District a “Mix It Up Model School” for its exemplary efforts to foster respect and understanding among its students and throughout its campus during the 2010-2011 school year. Woodland Middle School is one of only 52 schools from across the country to receive this honor.

I remember a hallway full of sunlight that streamed through floor-to-ceiling windows. Off to one side were tables and chairs for 3- and 4-year-olds. Miniature wooden tea sets from Russia, hand-painted in brilliant colors, were set neatly atop each table. At the end of the hall, I entered a playroom with rainforest murals covering the walls.
