Carmine Cella served in the United States Air Force from 1943 to 1946, and was stationed in Saipan and the Tinian during World War II, which are part of U.S.’s Northern Mariana Islands, in the western Pacific Ocean.
Cella, now 91, said he couldn’t help but notice a huge commotion while deployed in Tinian. “I knew something was going on over there,” he said. “I didn’t know what it was.”
He later learned he was on the same island as the atomic bombs, which would soon be launched on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Hundreds in East Meadow honored servicemen and women during the community’s annual Memorial Day parade, led by Grand Marshal Bernard Hein of the Jewish War Veterans Post 709. Residents waved, clapped and cheered as the parade, which also featured the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2736, the American Legion Post 1082, the East Meadow Fire Department, students from the East Meadow and W.T. Clarke High School bands and local Boy and Girl Scout troops marched toward Veterans Memorial Park.

The square sits serenely in the heart of East Meadow, and is an ideal place to sit, relax, and read a book on a warm spring or summer day.

East Meadowites came out to Veterans Memorial Park on Sept. 11 to remember the men and women who died during the attacks on the World Trade Center and while less tears were shed than in years passed, the solemn ceremony reflected on the loss still felt by the community.
