The Elmont Dads' Club, a group comprised of residents from the Elmont Union Free School District, held its annual “Clean Up Elmont Day” on April 21, in commemoration of Earth Day — an annual day that was observed on April 22 this year, in 175 countries worldwide.

The Town of Hempstead adopted a rezoning proposal for Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont on April 10, three months after Town Supervisor Kate Murray and councilmen Ed Ambrosino (R-North Valley Stream) and James Darcy (R-Valley Stream) announced that they would recommend the inclusion of mixed-use development in the proposal.

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on April 3 that $40.69 million in state funds will go toward nine New York Works projects that will repair 86 miles of state roads and six Long Island bridges. The projects include $2.2 million for the replacement of a deck above the vehicle-pedestrian access road to Belmont Park, along Hempstead Turnpike.

For the fourth consecutive year, the 16-mile stretch of Hempstead Turnpike in Nassau County was named the deadliest road for pedestrians in the tristate area by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign. The 2012 report, “Most Dangerous Roads for Walking,” was released on March 7.

The Town of Hempstead began construction in May on Hempstead Turnpike, between Elmont and School roads — in coordination with the Coalition for Sustainable Development's Community Vision Plan, which was first established in 2008. Today, construction workers laid down brick pavers and painted tree grates along that section of the turnpike.
