For the past 17 years, Woodmere Lanes Owner Nick Paxinos has been preparing and delivering Thanksgiving meals to St. Boniface Parish in Elmont and the First Baptist Church in Far Rockaway, but this year he’s also planning to serve those who are displaced by Hurricane Sandy.

From noon to 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the Number Six School at the intersection of Peninsula and Branch boulevards in Woodmere and on Wednesday at the Five Towns Community Center in Lawrence, the Town of Hempstead will have a walk-in center to help residents.

After speaking to her family, who is dispersed between Cedarhurst, Long Beach, New York City and Port Washington, and then reading comments on Facebook and viewing random online videos of the destruction Hurricane Sandy wrought in her native area, Boca Raton, Fla. resident Mara Cavallo Benkirane became determined to help.

The devastation that Hurricane Sandy caused to residents on Cheshire Road and the surrounding streets in Inwood is still apparent more than two weeks later as many remain busy cleaning out their homes, salvaging what they can and some are still without power.

Boys sorted the heated socks, teenage girls played and colored with younger children, the women cooked food and brought it out to families, men moved generators on dollies, and volunteers readied to go out on another run delivering needed items to distressed community members as snow from a nor’easter fell on Nov. 7.

John Giammarino’s one-level house stood near the intersection of Bellmore Avenue and Clubhouse Road for 30 years. But only three years after the south Bellmore resident began renting the waterfront home, his landlord sent crews to rip out what was left of the walls.
