Since Hurricane Sandy struck more than two years ago, 18 streetlights along state Route 878, also known as the Nassau Expressway, have not been working and have not been repaired because of confusion over which level of government is responsible.

Seeing a need borne out of Hurricane Sandy, when Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department firefighters had to rescue residents from the second and third floor of their homes due to flooding, students at Mesivta Ateres Yaakov, a yeshiva high school for boys in Lawrence, raised $1,500 in less than a week a few months ago and purchased a rescue boat they presented to the LCFD.
