The Atlantic Beach, Inwood, Meadowmere, North Lawrence and Woodmere fire districts were among the 56 percent of New York’s 882 fire districts that failed to file tax-levy information by Nov. 21. On Monday that figure was down to 40 percent, according to the state comptroller’s office. Fire districts were required to file the information by Nov. 4. more

The Atlantic Beach Bridge, which helps first responders cut travel time to area hospitals, will undergo a nearly $9 million overhaul of its interior working parts.

Atlantic Bridge to be renovated

Within the next two months, the Atlantic Beach Bridge’s electrical and mechanical components will begin to be replaced. The upgrade is needed because those parts date back to 1945, when the Nassau County Bridge Authority took over the bridge’s operation from a privately held group. more
