I have always donated blood and platelets whenever possible and I was especially pleased when the New York Blood Center contacted me nearly six months ago and told me that my 2005 donation was used to save a New York City firefighter’s life.

Recent polls show popular three-term New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s approval ratings declining as a result of his continued support for the proposed mosque near ground zero. But in my book, Bloomberg will always be top-notch for his willingness to fight for what he believes in, even if it’s not always popular.

When Lawrence-Cedarhurst firefighter Andrew Helicher was called to the scene of a fire early one morning last April, he recognized the address as belonging to the home next to his. Last Wednesday, Helicher received the Gold Medal of Valor from the Nassau County Fire Commission for his heroic rescue of an unconscious woman -- a rescue he performed without protective gear.
