The Republican-controlled Nassau County Legislature on June 16 approved fee increases for many county services, including parks, museums, pools, golf, marinas and vendor registration. County Executive Ed Mangano, who proposed the fee hikes in May, signed them into law June 19.

I am 25 years old, and until recently, I had never dived into the water. Call me crazy, but the prospect of plunging headfirst into a deep pool of blue had always spurred a sense of anxiety in me. So I was more of a slowly-ease-yourself-into-the-water-stair-by-stair-while-wincing-and-complaining-about-how-cold-the-water-is kind of guy.

A house painter on Wednesday pulled a babysitter and a toddler from a backyard pool at 2 Beechwood Drive in Lawrence. The 3-year-old toddler the woman was tending to was unable to be resuscitated. The babysitter was brought to the intensive care unit of St. John's Episcopal Hospital, but reportedly died later. Police said they believed that she had been in the pool and holding the little girl, when she lost her footing and drowned after drifting from the shallow end to the deep end.
