Although hard-fought losses were the rule and not the exception for Hewlett wrestlers in the finals of last Saturday’s Nassau Qualifying Tournament hosted by Mepham, the Bulldogs enjoyed a strong showing they hope will carry into the county championships this Friday and Saturday at Hofstra.

Hewlett varsity wrestling coach Stephen Jones is a busy man. It was the middle of the holiday season and still the early stages of the new season, but Jones wasn’t overwhelmed by the hustle, the bustle, the festivities or the workouts. Instead he was trying to think of everything, like a guy making a list and checking it twice.

A once-dormant Hewlett wrestling program is not only alive and well, but on the verge of something special. The Bulldogs capped a record-setting 2011-12 campaign with 10 participants in last weekend’s Nassau Division I championships at Hofstra and had a pair earn All-County honors.

Lawrence senior wrestlers Mohamed Chaudhry, Karl Ravilus and Isaiah Batts all went out on a winning note, capturing the fifth-place bouts to earn All-County honors along with junior Pankil Chander at the Nassau Division I championships.
Three Lawrence seniors capped their wrestling careers in style last Sunday at the Nassau Division I championships at Hofstra University.
