The Sewanhaka Central High School District is searching for its next superintendent, and will be holding a meeting on Thursday, March 10, at 7:30 p.m., in the auditorium of the Sewanhaka High School, at 500 Tulip Ave. in Floral Park. The Sewanhaka Board of Education is asking the public to submit comments for the superintendent search by March 4, through a survey on the district's website, but new comments can still be brought to the March 10 meeting. more

Gerald Waldman, of Huntington, the former assistant principal of Sewanhaka High School, was arraigned on charges of grand larceny and official misconduct on Feb. 18, accused of taking $113,000 from a union fund. Waldman, 59, was arrested by investigators from the Nassau County district attorney’s office. more
After hearing Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s budget release in early February, the Sewanhaka, Franklin Square and Elmont school districts have been on their feet, working to incorporate heavy school aid cuts and a proposed 2 percent property tax cap into their budgets. The tax cap, which was recently passed by the Senate and would take 76 of 150 votes in the Assembly to fully pass, wouldn’t go into effect until 2013, but districts are preparing ahead of time. more

The 50th annual District Music Festival, sponsored by the Sewanhaka Central High School District, was held at the New Hyde Park Memorial High School on Thursday, Feb. 3, at 7:30 p.m. The event featured the most talented young musicians from each of the district’s five schools, including the New Hyde Park, Sewanhaka, H. Frank Carey, Elmont Memorial and Floral Park Memorial high schools. Students were selected by audition in November, and more than 300 students from the district participated. more
