Lynbrook South Middle School students of Lynbrook Studio art teacher Andrea Gray have done more than just raise funds. Through their own imagination and creativity they have created “lamps” that were auctioned off at a silent auction on March 25.

Three people will be vying for two seats on the East Rockaway Board of Education that will be voted on in May. The seats will be vacated by longtime board members Vicki Alspector and Marie Girace, both of whom have chosen not to serve again next year.

Robert L. (Bob) Sympson is a tree hugger in every sense of the word. He is an untiring advocate of trees, planting them, studying them, educating the community about them. It’s no wonder that he has been named the recipient of the Arbor Day Foundation’s 2010 Lawrence Enersen Award for his lifelong conservation efforts.

During the third budget work session for the Lynbrook School District, officials detailed that facilities costs in the 2010-11 budget have decreased by five percent, the elementary science program will be redesigned, and five teachers in the district will be excessed due to a projected decrease in enrollment.

Lynbrook High School students Erica and Matthew DeMichiel collected over 120 new children’s books at multiple sites in Lynbrook and East Rockaway on behalf of First Book-Long Island, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing new books to children from low-income households in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The group’s mission is to instill a love of reading in youngsters who would not otherwise have access to books in their homes.

An audit released Dec. 29 by the state comptroller’s office has revealed that the Lynbrook school district appointed an independent contractor as its treasurer, even though state laws prohibits independent contractors from being school officials.
