Heated discussions about a possible artificial-turf field for the district have ended — at least until May. At the Lynbrook Board of Education’s last budget work session, on March 23, trustees voted 4-3 to offer a proposition for a $4.6 million artificial-turf complex in the upcoming district election. The money, trustees said, will come from the district’s reserves, and its Renovation and Improvement of Facilities fund.

Through the NY Islanders’ I.S.L.E. program, students at West End and South Middle schools in Lynbrook learned valuable lessons about hockey and teamwork.
Representatives from the Islanders visited their school with Islanders Mascot Sparky the Dragon for an assembly program called “We’re All Islanders.”

Certain addresses within the Lynbrook School district, formerly apart of an eliminated optional school zone for Marion Street and Waverly Park elementary schools, are now only be zoned for Waverly Park. Residents in this zone were formerly able to chose which school their children would attend.

To commemorate the International Day of Peace, students at Lynbrook’s Waverly Park School participated in an act of art activism called Pinwheels for Peace. Every student in the school created a pinwheel, decorated with their own personal message of peace. The entire student body, who gathered around the peace pole outside of their school, placed the pinwheels around the perimeter of the lawn to create a visual statement of their commitment to the ideals of peace.

Catherine Papandrew, president of the Lynbrook school board, has received a New York State School Boards Association Honorary Master of Boardsmanship Award. The award is the highest honor bestowed by the association’s Leadership Development Recognition Program.
