The Lynbrook Community hosted its fourth annual Relay For Life on Saturday, May 22 at the track of Lynbrook South Middle School on Union Avenue, from 5 p.m. until midnight. The event is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

The League of Women Voters hosted a Meet the Candidates Night at East Rockaway High School on May 10.
Three candidates, Patti Nicoletti, Kristin Ochtera and Sam Schwarzman are running for three available seats on the school board.
Pat Sympson was the moderator. Thirteen questions were provided by members of the audience and answered by the three candidates. They had time for a three-minute summation at the end of the forum.

The National Civic League announced that the Village of Lynbrook has been named one of its finalists for the 2010 All-America City awards, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious civic recognition award. Lynbrook was the only village that was chosen in the state of New York.

Robert L. (Bob) Sympson is a tree hugger in every sense of the word. He is an untiring advocate of trees, planting them, studying them, educating the community about them. It’s no wonder that he has been named the recipient of the Arbor Day Foundation’s 2010 Lawrence Enersen Award for his lifelong conservation efforts.

East Rockaway and Lynbrook thespians took part in a recent production of "On Broadway -- A Musical Revue" in Island Park recently.
The cast of 70 plus included many local actors, including community theater veterans as well as first-timers. Tickets sales broke records for ITPG, according to Director Renee Socci.

Deputy Mayor Richard Meagher has invited the public to attend a meeting on April 29 to help launch a new village organization, Coalition for Youths in East Rockaway. Meagher said he hopes the community-wide effort will help to educate parents and their children about the dangers of substance abuse and offer healthy, village-sponsored activities and programs for young people.

'On Broadway' — on Long Island

The Island Park Theatre Group, in conjunction with the Island Park Union Free School Recreation Department, presented “On Broadway - A Musical Revue” last weekend. A cast of 70 locals actors, dancers and singers entertained the audience at the Lincoln Orens Middle School in Island Park - and the IPTG broke records with its ticket sales.

Singing heartthrob Justin Bieber stayed at the brand-new Allegria Hotel last weekend while in town for the Pop-Con event at the Nassau Coliseum. Bieber was a headliner in the show, along with Selena Gomez and many other young stars.
