A bill introduced last Thursday in the State Senate, sponsored by the entire Long Island Senate delegation, would rename a 10-mile stretch of the Southern State Parkway in honor of Malvernite and NYPD Detective Steven McDonald, who died Jan. 10. The bill, which is expected to pass the Senate this session, proposes to rename the parkway the Steven McDonald Memorial Highway.

A treasure trove of original survey maps of the Long Island Motor Parkway — the country’s first road built exclusively for automobiles, in 1908 — have been in the basement of a Malverne business, the Learning Circle, for decades. “I saw them about 20 years ago and I didn’t pay much attention to them,” said Roy Knoernschild, an on-call custodian for the building.

With the sun beating down at mid-morning, a girls’ cross-country team was recently running up and down the half-mile-long hill on the south side of the Town of Hempstead’s Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve in Merrick, sweating profusely and breathing hard in the 90-degree-plus heat.
Taking it all in from the side of the seashell-coated path was a red fox –– yes, a red fox –– which stood in the shade, motionless and silent, panting continuously, its eyes half-shut. The runners appeared unfazed by its presence.

A two-vehicle accident at 3:41 a.m. last Sunday on the Southern State Parkway left an Oceanside man dead and injured several others when an SUV rear-ended another vehicle, causing it to veer into trees and a utility pole, New York State Police said.
