Hofstra journalism students take a hike to learn about science reporting

Eight Hofstra University graduate journalism students from Professor Scott Brinton’s Current Issues in Science Reporting class recently participated in and are reporting on an Envirothon that took place in the woodlands around the Meadowbrook Parkway in North Merrick, Roosevelt and Freeport on April 30. Brinton, of Merrick, is a senior editor and op-ed columnist with Herald Community Newspapers. The Nassau County Unprotected Woodlands Taskforce, headed by county Legislators David Denenberg and Norma Gonsalves, organized the event. more

Envirothon emphasizes damage in forests

Call it a tale of two forests. On the west side of the Meadowbrook Parkway, on the outskirts of Freeport and Roosevelt, there is the 73-acre Roosevelt Preserve, owned and maintained by Nassau County. There, the wide paths are clear of fallen trees and shrubbery and virtually trash-free. There is no evidence of campfires having burned down swaths of the woods, nor is there graffiti marring the abundant oaks and maples. more

Hike reveals woodlands vandalism

North Bellmore environmental activist Richard Schary was hurrying through the woods behind the Brookside School in North Merrick on Monday morning, dashing from tree to tree in search of graffiti. He had little trouble finding it. Vandals had spray-painted dozens of oak and maple trees along a well-worn path through the forest. more

Legislators take on wrong-way driving

The New York State Senate has passed legislation to enact felony charges for wrong-way and other reckless drivers, according to Sen. Charles Fuschillo Jr., a Republican from Merrick who sponsored the bill. The legislation is in response to a significant number of arrests and car crashes involving individuals who drove the wrong way while under the influence of alcohol. more

For nearly 10 years, the Herald has exposed the dire condition into which the woodlands surrounding the Meadowbrook Parkway have fallen. Vandals regularly spray graffiti on trees. Contractors dump their waste there. more

The Nassau County Unprotected Woodlands Taskforce discussed plans for an upcoming “Envirothon” at a meeting on Monday. At the Envirothon, the task force will announce a plan to allow fishing at Mullener Pond in North Merrick, where it has been prohibited.
