Q. I think your April 1-8 column had an error. You wrote that CO is heavier than air. CO has a molecular weight of 28. Air is mostly N2, which also has a molecular weight of 28. Air also has some O2, which has a molecular weight of 32, so the air mixture is heavier than CO. It should be OK to put the CO detector up high, and not near the floor.

Merrick Fire Department volunteers responded to a car crash at 10 Merrick Ave and Broadcast Plaza, in front of the State Farm office, on Monday. The Honda ran up on the sidewalk and smashed into the building. Fire department workers quickly disabled the car battery as a safety precaution. No injuries were reported. A second car suffered minor damage.

Under sunny skies, the Calhoun Sports Boosters Association dedicated the scoreboard at Calhoun’s baseball field this week in honor of the late Ronnie Gies, a Merrick Fire Department chief who was killed in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Four young people escaped serious injury and possible death when the car they were riding in lost control and skidded a considerable distance, overturned and slammed into a tree on the Meadowbrook Parkway just north of Babylon Turnpike on Friday, Jan. 22. The four were trapped inside until members of the Merrick Fire Department and State Police were able to remove them through one of the car doors.

The Merrick Fire Dept. installed its new chiefs at its 86th annual Installation Dinner on Jan. 23 at the Chateau Briand restaurant. The chiefs were sworn in by New York State David McDonough. During the ceremonies, citations and awards were presented to other members of the department for their accomplishments in 2009. Above are, from left, Second Assistant Chief Thomas J. Q. I read a Herald editorial about not being allowed to use my basement for extra bedrooms, and we already have bedrooms there from before we bought our house. How can my town tell me I can’t have bedrooms when everyone has them and we need the space?

Temperatures might have dipped into the 20s and 30s on Saturday, with the threat of a blizzard, but that didn't stop members of the Merrick Fire Department's Empire Hose Company No. 3 from holding their 13th annual Christmas tree fundraiser, with funds raised benefiting the Merrick F.D.

A recent string of fires at Calhoun High School in North Merrick has prompted an arson investigation, officials say.
According to Vincent McManus, division supervisor at the Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office, there have been six suspicious fires at the school since Nov. 19, three of which the North Merrick Fire Department responded to.
