The 13 sixth-graders in the Merrick School District’s Alternative Program for Enriching Experiences recently spent more than four months drawing blueprints for and meticulously crafting toothpick bridges. They even visited the Center for Architecture in Manhattan to study bridge construction, from beam to cantilever, truss and arch bridges, before undertaking their projects. Children at Merrick Woods, the day camp on Merrick Avenue in Merrick, took part in a cavalcade of games and competitions last week as part of the camp’s Olympics. In between the opening ceremonies on Wednesday and closing ceremonies on Friday, campers played sports, ran relays, jumped rope, climbed over obstacles, learned cheers, wrote sing-a-longs, made plaques and banners, and carried out a scavenger hunt. more
