Justin Plotnick was doing what any other 16-year-old would do. Last September, the Mepham junior was with his friends, skateboarding outside Mepham High School on a sunny afternoon. He had just bought a new fisheye lens for his camera earlier that day and was testing it out. That’s when his friend, Richie Dominguez, also a Mepham junior, converted a perfect tail slide with his skateboard on a nearby bench. Plotnick snapped the photo, but it wasn’t until after when he realized he had captured the moment perfectly. more
Students at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School in Merrick recently took part in a poster contest in honor of National Foreign Languages Week from March 5 to 11, sponsored by the Association of Foreign Language Teachers. The theme of this year’s contest was “You’re connected…Now communicate!” The Merrick School District offers FLES (Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools) in grades three to six. Students receive once-a-week instruction in conversational Spanish. more
When Mepham High School sophomore Sabrina Mastrangelo, of Bellmore, captured the title of Miss Long Island Teen last August, it was only her second pageant. So she was more than a bit surprised when, in her third competition, she was named Miss Teen New York. Sabrina spent her early years in East Rockaway and attended Rhame Avenue Elementary school until the 5th grade. more
