The Merrick American Legion’s ceremony to remember the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks started solemnly on Sunday with an invocation by Rabbi Paul Kirchner, but surprisingly it ended on an upbeat note when Sacred Heart School sixth-grader Alyssa Pallotta, dressed in a pink dress, took to the podium and sang “God Bless America.” Many in the crowd of 200 spontaneously joined hands and joined in singing this most American of songs. more

any from the Rockville Centre community are mourning the loss of Lester Wilensky, 85, who died on Dec. 18 from complications of a fall. The highly decorated World War II veteran was active in a number of veterans organizations including American Legion Post 303 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a Knight of Pythias. His contributions on the battlefield and as a civilian earned him the respect and admiration of family, friends and colleagues, and permanent recognition in the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame. more
In the 60th anniversary of the “Forgotten War” — the Korean conflict — veterans, village officials, police officers, firefighters and Rockville Centre residents of all generations filled the Recreation Center’s auditorium on the morning of Nov. 11 to make sure that American veterans are not forgotten. more
It was sunny and steamy on Monday morning as several generations of Rockville Centre residents paused to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice and those who put their lives at risk every day to defend America's liberty. Also remembered during the hour-long Memorial Day commemoration at Veterans' Memorial Park were the sacrifices of veterans who are still living and the families of those serving in the armed forces who continue to bear a heavy burden. more
