The Nassau County Legislature’s Public Safety Committee approved the Police Department’s revamped Police Precinct Efficiency Initiative along party lines, 4-3, at a Feb. 13 public hearing. The full Legislature will vote on the plan on Monday, Feb. 27. It must pass with a majority vote.

They’re called “pharm parties,” short for pharmacy parties. A group of teenagers –– perhaps as young as 12 and 13 years old –– methodically swipe opiate-based pain killers like Oxycontin and Oxycodone from their parents’ and grandparents’ medicine cabinets, dump the pills into a big bowl when no adult is looking and take turns rolling a die. Whatever number comes up, that’s the number of pills a teen must ingest.

“Hostage negotiators responding. They request that you do not enter the room the hostage is in.”
Lt. Christopher Romance of the Rockville Centre Police Department spoke with a calm authority as he relayed the message to his officers. “Suspect is a white male, he has two female hostages.”
Six men, including Mayor Francis Murray and Police Commissioner Charles Gennario, stood outside Mercy Medical Center’s St. Anne’s building, taking careful note of what was going on in the hospital. Had the situation been real, there would likely have been a number of news helicopters overhead and significantly more officers present.
