Competitions among Long Island’s fire departments go back as long as the volunteer companies have existed — 100 years of tradition. One of the most common forms of that competition is an Old Fashioned Drill where teams compete in eight firematic events involving the speed with which they can throw up a ladder, the speed they can climb that ladder, run down a course, stretch a hose line, trip a target with a hose stream, fill a barrel at the top of the arch, hoist buckets up a ladder and other related maneuvers that can and do occur at real fires. One of the best at these competitions over the last 10 years has been Rockville Centre’s own Woodlanders of the Woodland Engine Company No. 4. more

The Rockville Centre Fire Department held its annual Installation and Inspection Dinner Dance at the Sands at Atlantic Beach this past weekend, where Town of Hempstead Councilman Anthony Santino and Nassau County Legislator Joseph Scannell were among the officials on hand to honor the firefighters and officers moving up the line. more

Kim Martino has a long family history in the Rockville Centre Fire Department. Her father, Billy Lapkowski, has been a member for over 40 years. She has many uncles, including former village Mayor Gene Murray, who were chiefs of the department. Her husband, Joe, joined up after the two of them married and moved to Rockville Centre. And her sister, Eileen DeBono, is also a member. So it is really no surprise that Martino herself joined the RVCFD, and has been a member for nearly nine years. As she said, it’s in her blood. more
