Just a few weeks before Wellington C. Mepham High School’s class of 2013 celebrated commencement, one of the school’s first groups of graduates reconnected with one another at their 70th reunion. Nearly a dozen of the 68 remaining members of Mepham’s class of 1943 came together for the celebration at The Nook in Wantagh on June 7. The alumni scanned through their yearbook and other photos and memorabilia, remembering their high school days. more
Two moments resonate in Bill Katz’s mind that helped instill his lifelong love for music. The first was as a 15-year-old living in Far Rockaway in 1945, when he stopped at a candy store on his way home one night, and his eyes landed on a magazine called Esquire Jazz Magazine. The magazine included photos of the era’s greatest musicians, including Louie Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Coleman Hawkins. It also included a jazz recording, which Katz played once he arrived home. “I was just smitten by it,” said Katz, who has taught music education for more than 60 years, and 40 at East Meadow High School. “I started buying jazz records.” more
Gloria Chapman was once Gloria Dinger. She once lived on Kenneth Avenue in North Bellmore, after moving into her home in 1933. She once climbed an apple tree when playing with friends near Camp Avenue, which had only four houses and a farm when she was in elementary school. more
