Two weeks after ceremonies marked the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, the Town of Hempstead honored another fallen hero. On Sunday morning, Delaware Avenue, in Island Park was ceremonially renamed for retired New York City firefighter and Long Beach volunteer fire captain John R. Elges. His son, John, and his family live in the village. more

Dozens of teachers and hundreds of students participated in OHS' outdoor 9/11 reflection on Friday ahead of the 20th remembrance with a day of special events. Students helped place miniature American flags adorned with paper flowers around the perimeter of the school, visited with retired FDNY member Dave Williams, whose firetruck is now a 9/11 Memorial on wheels, held a moment of silence near 20 American flags, representing the years since 2001, and viewed the flags of more than 50 countries that also lost citizens on that day. more

Jesse Pilnik has been nominated for two NY Emmy Awards, one for Let's Learn NYC (Children/Youth Long Form), and another for Understanding LGBTQ Indentiy: We'Wha (Historical/Cultural Short Form Content). more
With Covid-19 booster shots looking likely, Mount Sinai South Nassau hospital in Oceanside recently conducted a poll to gauge interest in the third jab and opinions on mask use in schools. The “Truth in Medicine Poll” found that an overwhelming majority of vaccinated Long Island and New York City residents said they would get the booster when available. more
The St. Vincent de Paul Society in Oceanside kicked off its fundraising efforts last weekend ahead of the 13th annual Friends of the Poor Walk and 5K at Bethpage Community Park on Sept. 25. The walk and 5K are the society’s main fundraisers each year, and funds go directly to the community as part of the society’s mission to help neighbors in need. more
Under Gov. Kathy Hochul’s direction, the New York State Department of Health mandated on Aug. 27 that all public and private school students in grades pre-K to 12 must wear masks in school this fall. The Oceanside School District voted Aug. 31 to formalize its mask requirement. Still, the debate raged on, with many parents signaling their frustration with the mandate during the 75-minute meeting. The board, though, stood by its unanimous decision to abide by state guidelines requiring masks. more
Dozens gathered at the intersection of West Henrietta and Fulton Avenue in Oceanside on the morning of Aug. 28 to commemorate their neighbor, NYPD officer Steven Brandow, who died in February from Covid-19. Family and friends were on hand to see Brandow’s memory etched into the community, as Town of Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin renamed the street after the Oceanside resident. more
On Aug. 26, Oceanside Sanitation District 7 Commissioner Austin Graff took to Facebook to announce the department’s proposed 3.9 percent tax increase for the 2022 budget, citing “rising costs like insurance, gas and salaries.” more
