Rockville Centre Village Attorney A. Thomas Levin is one of five Long Island attorneys who have again been notified by New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli that they will have their state pensions revoked. The move is part of DiNapoli’s ongoing review of the state retirement system during which his office has revoked pensions or pension credits of 62 professionals statewide.

It's a safe bet that any dust settling on the blackboard in Lisa Drewes's classroom at Fayette Elementary School in North Merrick is a byproduct of abandonment rather than chalk.
The fourth-grade room is outfitted with one of 15 SMART Boards in the North Merrick School District, a new tool that teachers are crediting with revolutionizing teaching methods and making conventional blackboards obsolete. "I put my schedule on it every day, aside from that I don't write on my blackboard at all," Drewes said.

Gov. David Paterson’s dire warning last week of a $5 billion deficit in the state budget over the next two years, and his plans to address it, drew a swift — and negative —response from local officials. The governor’s plan calls for a $3 billion reduction in state spending in the current fiscal year, ending March 30, and includes a reduction in state aid to schools by about $690 million.

Assemblyman Robert Barra (R-Lynbrook) said he’s outraged at what he describes as a ”blatant money grab orchestrated by Gov. David Paterson and his cohorts in the state Legislature.” As part of the 2009-10 state budget, which he voted against, drivers licenses and registration fees will increase dramatically.
