Supreme Court Justice Steven M. Jaeger ruled on July 21 that the Nassau County redistricting plan — which was crafted by the county attorney’s office at the suggestion of Peter Schmitt, a Republican who represents the 12th Legislative District — does not apply to the 2011 election. Jaeger went on to say that 2013 would be the earliest the Nassau redistricting plan could be put into use.   more

The Nassau County Legislature passed a measure to redraw the current legislative map in a vote on Tuesday. Ten Republicans voted for the plan, while seven Democrats voted against it. Legislator Denise Ford, a Republican from Long Beach, was the lone dissenting voice in her party.

Under a Republican plan to redraw the Nassau County Legislature’s district lines, Democratic Legislator David Denenberg, of Merrick, would see his district –– the 19th –– merged with Legislator Joseph Scannell’s district –– the 5th. In effect, Democrats would lose a seat. A State Supreme Court justice, however, placed a temporary restraining order on the plan on Thursday, effectively preventing it from taking effect until the matter is decided in court. Gold Star mother from Rockville Centre joins vets, parents and county exec to denounce Supreme Court ruling

Marianna Winchester, a Rockville Centre Gold Star mother who lost her son, 1st Lieutenant Ronald Winchester in Operation Iraqi Freedom, joined Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano, other Gold Star parents and local veterans last week to denounce the recent 8-1 Supreme Court ruling in the case of Snyder v. Phelps. The ruling found that no matter how hateful their speech, the First Amendment protects Westboro Baptist Church protestors who have been picketing military funerals. more
