This Sunday, Sept. 26, starting at 9:30 a.m., participants from all over the country and the world will take part in the ninth annual Tunnel to Towers Walk/Run. The event retraces the path that firefighter Stephen Siller, a former Rockville Centre resident, took from the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, when he lost his life trying to save others trapped inside the twin towers. more
On Aug. 15, the Lung Cancer Research Foundation hosted its 5th Annual Strides for Life 3-mile fun run/walk around Lake Agawam in Southampton. A record 1,100 people turned out to enjoy the gorgeous weather, bond with friends and family and raise funds for critical lung cancer research. Rockville Centre resident Joe Buckheit and fellow lung cancer survivor Joey Smith cut the ribbon to start the race with the event’s mistress of ceremonies and "Good Day NY" host Rosanna Scotto, who was busy cheering on the crowd. more
Runners from across Long Island turned out for the annual Bellmore Striders Independence Day run on Sunday, July 4. Some 559 runners competed in the four-mile race that morning. A one-mile youth run was also held. more
Lynbrook resident Dan McGrath, 27, won last Sunday’s Long Island Marathon, finishing in 2 hours, 29 minutes, 44 seconds. “It was exciting to win,” McGrath said of the race, in which runners compete at three different distances. “The Long Island Marathon is a great local event for competitive local runners — as well as other recreational runners — to challenge themselves over 10K, the half-marathon and the marathon.” more
A soggy Sunday didn't stop nearly 400 runners and 1,000 people in total last week from turning out for the Fifth Annual Robbie's Run for a Reason at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School in Merrick, which raised $40,000 to supply defibrillators for youth sports fields and leagues. more
