It was certainly an experience for the more than 200 scouts and parents who camped out at the Village Green last week. A rainstorm in wee hours of Saturday morning not only soaked the site but it flooded some tents and sent many campers fleeing to their cars.

The first annual Battle of the Bands, co-sponsored by Strong Side Studios and Star Potential Inc., brought about 200 people to the Village Green on July 23. Unsigned band This Time Tuesday won electronic and hard copy press kits along with six-hours of recording studio time and bragging rights.

Valley Stream artist Mike Stanko was once inspired to paint by the two vending machines at Firemen’s Field, he said. Whether he was stricken by the beauty of the red lights of the Coca-Cola dispenser against snow-covered baseball diamonds or the grilled cheese sandwich he had for lunch, Stanko said he loves to share his paintings and prints that are influenced by his hometown.

The Valley Stream Community Band kicked off its 59th concert season on July 5 at the John Smith Bandshell on the Village Green. The concerts are hosted by the village and the Central High School District. Performers include local residents and teachers.

Tents dotted the Village Green last weekend for the 31st annual scout Camporee. About 250 Cub, Boy, Venture and Girl scouts took part in the three-day, two-night event in the great outdoors.

Village officials say that emergency repairs are needed for the culvert on Valley Stream Boulevard, and that they will move ahead with replacing it in the coming months. Once the $2 million construction project begins, the road will be closed for several months.
