I just read your article about the cuts to the school district (“Major cuts in store for high schools,” Feb. 14-20) and am furious.  So, Superintendent Bill Heidenreich wants to immediately cut transportation for 90 non-public school children, and is callously quoted as saying, “Do we want to have middle school sports or do we want to provide yellow bus transportation to non-public school students? I choose middle school sports.” more
I find it very disconcerting that last week’s Herald article, “Envision: hotels a plus for Valley Stream,” a member of the Valley Stream’s District 30 and Central High School District board, Elise Antonelli, stated that the village does not have a good reputation for considering the needs of the residents. more
Now that the dust has settled and many homeowners have found out if they are in or out of the high risk flood zone, I thought that it was time to express my thoughts on the proposed new flood maps from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Sadly, the maps discussed at the meeting at Village Hall on Jan. 2 have many inconsistencies. more
Last week, many Valley Stream residents attended a public meeting that I, together with the members of the village board, hosted at Village Hall. The purpose of the meeting was to share information about the proposed new changes to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s flood maps that affect so many of us, and to give property owners the opportunity to learn what their current status is with regard to the new zones. more
We can see with our own eyes it is now long past time that we bury our power and phone lines instead of stringing them from vulnerable poles that are a relic of the 19th century telegraph system. more

The Gibson section of Valley Stream passed the recent 1-percent-chance-in-100-years test with Hurricane “Frankenstorm” Sandy and the nor’easter with no flooding and no property damage to my Gibson Boulevard home. more
Forget about big parades for our sports players after a winning series. We should have a parade to honor all our police, sanitation and park crews, firefighters, LIPA workers and all the volunteers who left their owns homes to help their neighbors. God bless us all. more
