Five Nassau County gun shop owners –– including an East Meadow resident who owns a shop in Merrick and a Bellmore resident who owns shops in New Hyde Park and Seaford –– have been arrested and charged with illegally selling assault weapons, Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced on Thursday. UPDATE: On April 19, 2012, all charges against Michael Marinello and South Shore Sportsman, Inc., were dismissed by Judge F. Ricigliano in First District Court, Nassau County.

A fierce winter storm that rolled into Bellmore-Merrick around 9 a.m. on Sunday continued to pound the community through Monday morning, dumping 12 to 20 inches of snow on the ground and buffeting the area with winds from 15 to 50 miles per hour. Temperatures dipped into the teens.

Gibson wasn’t the most athletic student at Mepham High School in Bellmore in the 1940s, so becoming popular at a school that placed a high value on success in sports –– in particular, in wrestling –– was no easy feat. But, man, could Gibson play boogie-woogie piano, and at the time this highly rhythmic style of the blues ruled the airwaves.

When firefighters wash down their trucks after making on a run, they may have to pay a fee on that water. Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, a Republican from Bethpage, has proposed a water use fee in the county’s 2011 budget. At a news conference in front of the North Merrick firehouse on Friday, Nassau County Legislator Dave Denenberg said the fee is really a tax.
