With this week’s column, the Principal’s Office begins its sixth year. It’s time to look backward as well as forward. But first, a few thank yous are in order. Scott Brinton has not only been my editor, but has also become a friend and sounding board for new ideas. Executive Editor John O’Connell has always been a prime supporter and booster. The PSA, along with an educational website, is the latest joint effort by the district attorney and Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano to alert parents to the growing heroin problem on Long Island.

Updated: 2:30 p.m.Nassau County Police and the U.S. Marshals Service cordoned off the Bellmore Post Office and surrounding streets at around 11 a.m. today, shutting down Merrick Road for several blocks to the east and west. According to police, a woman who U.S. marshals were tracking turned up at the mail facility with a bottle marked "sodium cyanide."

Thomas Crotty stood and stared for a moment on Friday at the twisted, rusted, 1,600-pound steel girder in front of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s Brookside School in North Merrick. “It was very thoughtful of the community and the young people to do this so the day and the people will not be forgotten,” Crotty remarked.
