To the Editor: “Who can blame Bayh for quitting” former Senator D’Amato asks in his recent opinion piece (“The rewards of being in the elite class,” Feb. 25-March 3). Well, to be honest, I can, and I would imagine most of the country’s unemployed can as well. I own a small company and we have dropped from 15 to nine employees over the past two years.

To the Editor: At the recent Hempstead Town Board meeting, I attended to express my opinion on the salary increases they gave themselves. The manner and timing of the increases was disingenuous at best, showing a lack of regard for the poor economy.

Some years back, I caved to familial pressure and agreed to bring a dog into our household. I had always had dogs while growing up — abroad — and they had enriched my life and the lives of others around the family. What I had not reckoned with was the paucity of facilities for dogs in Nassau County and its towns.
